Let's start with science: The kids were doing various tests focusing on only one sense (sight, sound, or touch) at a time to try to catch a ruler. We had a great discussion about how our nervous system plays such an important role in our lives, and how people may be impacted when one of their senses is impaired.

Lastly, I will be sending home mid-term grade updates tomorrow. Please look for them in your child's Friday Folder or Take Home Folder. Here is the letter that accompanies them that explains:
Dear Students and Families,
Attached is a “mid-term” grade report. This is a print out from my electronic grade book that breaks down each assignment, test, quiz, and performance, as well as provides an overall grade for each subject. These are the current grades as of 1/22/16. Please note that these are the current grades and that they may still change before report cards go out. There are still many more points before the end of the third trimester. THESE ARE NOT REPORT CARD GRADES. The grades you are seeing should be no surprise as they are all grades that should have come home in the home folders and Friday Folders each week. This is just a comprehensive look at how all the grades are together forming the overall subject area grades. Missing assignments (for those who have any) show up as a “0”.
If you have any questions about these grade reports please feel free to contact me. At this time e-mail is probably quicker due to many meetings and professional obligations before and after school, but you can also leave me a voicemail, if you prefer.
Please also note that there may not be math midterms since we switch for math class. These reports are something I personally have chosen to do, but the other fifth grade teachers do not. Since I do not handle the math grades of students in other rooms for math I have no grades or printouts for those students.
Please remember that we switch off between science and social studies units. We focused on a social studies unit this first part of the trimester and have recently switched to science after winter break; therefore there is only one homework assignment in the science grade currently.
I hope this helps you to better understand where your child’s grades and homework completion stand at this point in the trimester!
Have a great weekend! :)
