As we gear up for the last week before Winter Break, we have many final projects, unit tests, and assignments to wrap up. So, here goes:
Reading:
-Number 13-24 have a reading log due on Friday 12/16. No reading logs are due over Winter Break, so number 1-12 won't be due again until January 6th.
-Revolutionary War Novel Tests will be on Tuesday afternoon. This will be open book and open note. Students should review their notes prior to the test so the information is fresh and they do not spend too much time looking through notes when taking the test.
-The Freedom Walkers evaluation will be on Thursday afternoon. This evaluation will be set up just like all of the activities and notes we have been taking throughout the book, but with a new chapter-chapter 7. Students are encouraged to read chapter 7 before Thursday so that they are familiar with the chapter before taking the test.
-ABC Book Projects for Revolutionary War novels are due on Thursday.
History:
-Chapter 15 study guides are due tomorrow. The test will be Wednesday morning. Study resources are posted to the fifth grade page on Edmodo.
- An extra credit research opportunity for social studies was posted to Edmodo this week. Any students interested in completing this optional assignment should be sure to submit their work by December 13.
Spelling, Grammar & Vocab:
-We will not do spelling, grammar, or vocab this week as we wrap up so many other areas. We will return to our weekly routines after winter break.
Math:
-This section applies to students in my math class only. I am sure you have heard that as a whole, we had a hard time with the Chapter 3 Fractions test. I spent a great deal of time looking through each and every test to determine areas where we may not have spent enough time, where directions may not have been clear, or where test questions may have been tricky. After pouring over the tests, the areas where students need reinforcement are really spread out over many areas. Some students need some practice with using benchmarks to think about fractions, some need extra practice in determining which operation is needed in story problems, some need extra practice in organizing their work for multi-step problems, and some need to practice looking for whether answers can be simplified. We spent a good deal of time going over all of this as a class. Each student has completed a reflection on their test and we are working on all of the previously mentioned areas. We will work on those story problems and how to better break them down and keep track of the work on Monday. The retake will be on Tuesday morning. Students should have completed the retake request form, completed a fraction review packet, and completed a minimum of 30 minutes of fraction practice on Khan Academy this weekend. I will be offering an optional 8:30am review on Tuesday morning if any students feel they could use an additional boost before the test. Please just have your child check in at the front office they will be coming.
Please remember to send in the permission slip for Remember the Titans by Thursday, December 15th.
Friday is Pajama Day!
If you child is a safety patrol who is on post for the rest of Decemeber and January, please be sure to encourage them to check the weather and to check Edmodo each morning. If they wind chill or real temperature are below zero there will be no OUTDOOR patrol. We will do our best to post on the Emdodo page as soon as we know for sure what the decision will be.
As always, please do not hesitate to email any questions you have. I hope you are all enjoying the view of the snow without having to be out running around in it! :)
